Helping realise the potential of electric performance vehicles

Transports emissions make up a quarter of the UK's total carbon emissions and must be reduced if the UK is to meet its 80% reduction target by 2050.  The successful transition to a new breed of high-performance - low-carbon vehicle will need to be part of the solution. Through our management of the EEMS Accelerate project, AEA is proud to be at the forefront of that transition.

As part of the Technology Strategy Board's £25m Ultra-Low Carbon Vehicle Demonstrator competition, the EEMS Accelerate project puts four cutting-edge, British-designed and engineered electric cars in the hands of regular drivers for a year. The cars now on the roads are the Westfield Sport-E, the Delta E-4 Coupe, Ecotricity's Nemesis and the Electric Lightning GT.  Using these vehicles for their everyday use in the same road and environmental conditions that a regular road car would be used in, the drivers will feedback unique weekly insights and practical performance information.

The manufacturers will be able to use this real-world data to improve their vehicles, engineering skills and technology. The data will be published by the Technology Strategy Board, alongside the results of the wider Ultra Low Carbon Vehicles Demonstrator Programme, and it will also be used by UK Government to inform future road infrastructure and transport policy.

At the same time, EEMS Accelerate will challenge the current public and market perceptions on how electric vehicles should look and drive. The EEMS Accelerate cars are stylish, dynamic and innovative, and push technology boundaries for batteries, motors and chassis design.

 The transition towards low carbon transport will not be easy but the EEMS Accelerate demonstrator programme is a major step in the right direction. Ultimately, the knowledge gained from the programme will help to create electric vehicles that mean no compromise in comfort, performance and style.

Commenting on the project, Robert Bell, AEA Director said: "If the UK is to be at the forefront of the low carbon automotive technology then we need to invest and test new innovative products to ensure that the next generation of green vehicles is not just as good as the vehicles we currently use but actually better."
